Steel-The Metal assumed a generation
About Life Today
Those who live in the era after the flower from such things as the "Baby Boomers, the Apollo, the war in Viet Nam and the First War Gulf know that we are inheriting a world of technology. There are lots of small toys clean and keep us all busy and fun. Most of us do not I understand all the effort that went into bringing us the wonderful things we have. But most of us know how to load songs on an i-pod and listen to songs while our parents look mystified about the use of this 21st century marvel.
Well, the same could be said, conversely, some of the things that surround us all day. When we go to work, we see men unloading the truck and stack materials that will be used to manufacture the products of today. Whether an audio playback device, a desk, an electrical control panel, an assembly of a crane or drilling rig, they must all be supported by a rigid metallic structure strong. The framework for many of today's products depends on a relatively light weight but strong metal that is reliable, once sent to the country to operate under many conditions the coming years. Our grandchildren will one day ask the question, "Who did this and why they did build the way they did?" As team member who every day face the task of deciding what we do and how we do it, a part of this task is: what will be done? Options are often made of wood, plastic or metal. Each has its pros and cons. We can talk about those here, in a process of selecting what and why.
What and why
The choice materialstarts with a common sense to the design team and some of the things that guide us are what kind of product is, where will it be used, how time has to last and whether there are standards to be met. The first question, "what kind of product is" that makes us ask the question what is more humid, is operated in or out, is carrying devices that conduct electricity or chemicals. Each answer leads us to conclude that the choice of materials is adequate for our use. The wood is relatively strong, and may be suitable to surround team that has a very low voltage, a speaker frame. But it can be big and bulky for the strength of a structure of holding to a crane in a building. Plastics may be low in weight, but you might recognize them as very suitable for the cover of a toy but not something we want to support a drilling rig. Metals have been the bulwark of the generations in many structures, frames, furniture, bodies valve and cars or trucks. Also the interior parts such as engine blocks and pistons are subjected to pressures and high temperatures, together with a continuous cycle repeat a movement. This requires a selection of metallic materials due to the properties exhibited by the metals in the repeated use and application.
There are many metals to Choose From and usually a computer that already has experience with a product before where they had successes and some failures in the way of product development. Some groups may have more experience while others may have almost none. These advanced groups may find this article to a child while small groups at least other experienced can be saying "slow down, going to fast." Maybe you have been using wood and plastic in their products. And others may be saying, they would like to save money or weight by going to a piece of plastic. Well let's see if that is a wise choice, or whether or not metals are your best option.
Earlier I wrote that there are many metals, the "Table of the Elements Atomic" are the elements in a sorted table organized by the number of electrons and protons that make up that element it is. The items on the left and right are gases or dust and is generally not where we want to find a very strong metal. Looking over half of the table we see of titanium, iron, nickel and copper. All these are familiar names, but what would we use for our application, if we decide to go with a metal in the framework of our product. Cost may be a factor that would drive our decision. Titanium is light but can cost much compared to copper. Also would be able to get in the way we wanted. And finally, if we could get a block of material to make our product, what are the court costs and machining of the part. Do you carry out drills and saw blades standard or require special equipment, the process could take much longer. If the answers seem to be generating too many negative responses perhaps the team has to look elsewhere.
Copper is good, there was a previous civilization based on the use of copper brass and bronze. Some team members may remember their high school days when I had to study about the "Age of Bronze." They should be recalled the Greeks and the Romans used early forms of these metal alloys to make swords and spears, weapons of mass destruction, at least in the days of sailing ships power. What was that one word, I just used? What is a metal alloy? Well it is a simple description, an alloy that is a combination two or more metallic elements mixed together to produce a third metal that exhibits characteristics of both components. What's that you might wonder? It's like a nectarine, which tastes like a peach, but has the consistency of an apple. Great, why would anyone want to choose an alloy? Well, alloys Metal acquire new features that make them in some cases as "super materials." Before the 20th century people would do things that worked iron and well, except maybe when it might rain, or when the metal object may be hot and accidentally ejected. Oops, it cracked when he left or when it became a valve handle to stop the flow of the hot syrup, etc. Or maybe they need to build a tower to support a water tank and need to be 100 feet tall. They do not want your legs and bend the bow, or they want to add. So what's the answer? The answer came in the mid-1800s when men were experiencing with better and cheaper ways to produce steel. Any advancement in the power and cost reduction could provide an advantage to anyone who could develop new and better alloys. The new metal alloy was called Steel. Was much stronger than iron, and more durable. It can be used in a thickness less and become stronger, which saves weight and money. Now that we know a bit about the introduction of alloy steel, we can cover more in my next article, bye for now!
