STD rates among young Rising, CDC says

After upgrading the years, rates of sexually transmitted diseases have stopped falling and in some cases increased, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently reported.

The annual rate of AIDS diagnoses among men aged 15 to 19 years has almost doubled in the last 10 years, from 1.3 to 2.5 cases of cases per 100,000 people between 1997 and 2006, target = "_blank"> the CDC report said.

Gonorrhea, syphilis rate increases

Similarly, after declining for years, gonorrhea and syphilis infection rates among adolescents and young adults have increased. Among males 15 to 19 years gonorrhea rate increased from 250 to 275 cases per 100,000 between 2004 and 2006. The rate of syphilis among women aged 15 to 19 years increased from 1.5 to 2.2 cases per 100,000 population from 2004 to 2006. Both rates followed by decreases in previous years, the report said.

"It is disappointing that after years of improvement over the teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, we now see signs that progress is slowing and many of these trends are going in the wrong direction " said Janet Collins, Ph.D., director of CDC, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

About one million teenagers and young adults between 10-24 year reported that chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis in 2006, the report said. Almost a quarter of women aged 15-19, and 45 per cent of people aged 20-24, had a human papillomavirus (HPV) during 2003-2004.

About 100,000 women aged 10-24 years visited an emergency department for a nonfatal injury, sexual assault during the period 2004-2006, according to the CDC.

STD Symptoms potentially fatal

Over 65 million Americans are affected by an incurable sexually transmitted diseases, according to the CDC. General symptoms may include unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, a burning sensation when urinating, tumors, sores, itching in the genital area, the lower paid abdomen, dark urine, skin rashes or ulcers, yellow eye, fever, headache, nausea, inflammation of the joints and lymph nodes.

Bacterial STDs, like gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics. Even with treatment, any damage is permanent. ETS virus like herpes, HIV / AIDS and human papilloma virus (HPV) is considered incurable but can be treated. If infected, seek treatment immediately.

If untreated, STDs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to infertility, cervical cancer, chronic pelvic pain, tubal (ectopic), damage to major body organs, and death.

Abstinence is the best

According to the CDC, the surest way to prevent pregnancy or infection with sexually transmitted diseases is sexual abstinence, whereas sole. Those who marry are better protected by selecting a partner who is not infected with an STD and remain sexually faithful during marriage.
