My son caught smoking weed. Help?
I took my son (senior year) smoking weed. It was last night – I told him to go to bed because the school has – and let's talk about it after school. What should I do or say? Option 1) drop it – but I'm pretty sure that the rebellious and do it later. I really do not like this option – Because I remember when I was young – 10 time would both go back to my parents. Option 2) control both the situation as possible (ie, driving, etc). He has good grades and a part-time job – so it is not a failure and not lazy. So I'm thinking: 1) Do not let the unit, except for work and school, and 2) Tell him he can do what you want unless your grades drop. I smoked a little when I was young – and still went to University and a Bachelor and a good job. Luckily, he stopped smoking – as I hope they will too. Be high only made me paranoid, self-conscious, hungry hot – still do not understand the attraction – not a good state to be in!
The fact that he has smoked at least when you were young, does not mean you can not take a strong position with his son now. And I would not take lightly the side effects you mention – such as paranoia and nasty to be – because depression, suicidal thoughts, dangerous or illicit sex can happen with what you're describing. Give the devil an inch, and will become the rule. Please note that your child can throw alcohol or other drugs in the mix, and he can fight or having unsafe sex or make a series of dangerous things that would not under normal circumstances. No street drugs safe – just drugs that some people are more socially tolerant. Especially those who used to dabble in them. You should also consider that the weed you buy might be contaminated or tampered with something stronger. Drug dealers do not want casual users to smoke a little dope now and then … then want users to hardcore addicts who are customers of return. Unless I can promise your child that the boat you purchase is always "pure" and that's always going to get high by himself in a secure room and remain in complete control of himself and his habits, then you need to take a more proactive approach here …. and feel like a hypocrite as you go. When I was in my high school friends was killed because he was driving while he was high …. my first husband was addicted to it even in his 30 years and 40 (who divorced before their time since then), which would discharge the day, jumping from one job to the relationship and misery to the miserable relationship, because of a weed habit acquired when he was 15. I tell you, it sounds as if you're taking this too lightly. Need to share the potential consequences with your child, along with a no tolerance policy. That he expected more from him, is capable of more, and you will not stay while he still makes decisions that are foolish and potentially much more destructive to his life he realizes. You have apparently caught early, be thankful. You say you do not like the idea of grounding, and that it is ineffective. Maybe so. However, you will have to find a way to discipline him and force him to be responsible again. Trust is something you have to win and I'll have to set some clear rules on the communication between the two of you every time you come and go, and may have to establish some basic rules about the company maintains. You're doing this for their own welfare. Until he realizes the import what is doing, he doens't need a father who is a best friend … it needs a director who will help straighten out. I am not suggesting that the abuse verbal or physical …. but the firmness and consistency. I take away the car for a short period of time (2-3 weeks?) Are walking to and from the bus stop and ride the bus like a younger child to school every day. We have done our teens when he had a temper tantrum and kicked at the door of his bedroom. Was more effective. The discomfort and humiliation of the bus back again after being the cool guy with a car has an impact. Bottom line – You can take a different approach, but please, be firm, please make sure your child is informed of all possible consequences, and do not take lightly, simply because he delved into 20 years ago.
