Cast Minnow
How do you fish with shad, minnows, shiners etc.? How do you set them up on the hook?
Do you just put the hook through its lip like you would normally catch a fish, and just cast it out and let it swim around?
kinda depends on the application,for crappie i would say just hok through the lips.some people say hook through the tail.for me i do alot of striper and catfishing so i hook them through the back under the dorsal fin and then turn the hook and run it back through to where it comes back out.this way it is a little more stable on the hook.stripers hit really hard so the extra hooking does not knock the bait from the hook if the fish short strikes.
To begin, hook minnows or suckers just below the back fin without nicking the spine. This allows a minnow to swim freely, struggling in all directions, while the split shot rests on the bottom. If this doesn’t produce, try hooking the minnow up through the lips. This creates a more neutral presentation, because a lip-hooked minnow tends to rest rather than struggle and attempt to swim away. Minnows: Minnows are a fantastic bait for virtually any species of fish. How to hook minnows depends on the type of fishing you are doing. For still fishing, I prefer to place the hook just forward of the dorsal fin, being careful not to run the hook through the spinal column. Minnows hooked in this manner live for a long time. Other fishermen prefer to hook their minnows through the lips or tail. If you hook your minnow through the tail, however, allow enough time for panfish to swallow the bait. Since fish swallow most prey head first, the minnow must be down the throat of the fish before the hook can be set.
