Resident of Krabi – Yellow Tiger tail seahorse
Ringing in good news for the new year, a newcomer who reside in Krabi was discovered by one of our instructors KrabiDivers.com New Year's Day. At 4-cm long, appearing pregnant. Yes, "he" was pregnant as the male of this species are pregnant and productive!
Krabi, southern Thailand, is the gateway to the famous Andaman Sea, where divers and snorkellors around the world convene the approach of winter in the western world. And here is where we find our tiger tail seahorses in the New Year's Day!
Seahorses are amazing creatures. The seahorse is one of four families in Syngnathiformes family which also includes pipefish, tail and marlin flag seadragons. Swimming position vertical with the tail down and head by wearing his number to move forward and the pectoral fins for steering control. It is also unique in its prehensile tail (able rotation and grip), tube-like mouth (no teeth) and small gill slits. Seahorses (like chameleons) can even move their two eyes independently from each other. Ranging in size from the small 10 mm to 35 cm, the larger the Pacific seahorse. Seahorses eat small crustaceans that capture time staying still and waiting for their prey until it is about, and they stay with. Then, the mouth of the tube, creating a vacuum that sucks the prey and swallow whole.
Seahorses are unusual in a couple of ways. One is that they are monogamous and have long periods when mating courtship. Monogamy not is common in all animals but especially fish. The longer a couple of seahorses stick, the better are in the production of babies. It is the male sea horses that carry their eggs in a pouch on his belly after the eggs have been deposited by the female. The eggs are fertilized in the bag and incubated 10 days to 4 weeks before they hatch. At hatching, the male gives birth to fully developed but tiny seahorses. The natural lifespan of seahorses is not known, but believed to be a year for small species to five years for larger species. Very elusive and difficult to detect in water movement, the search for a sea horse is the dream of every diver reality.
So you can imagine our absolute euphoria when we saw the little yellow Tiger-Cola. Being creatures of habit, once installed in a location, do not tend to move much. Therefore, we find again and I would like to show you.
